About Milan Swolfs

Cinematic portraiture inspired by the elegance of the past, shaped through character lenses and timeless light.

Milan Swolfs is a fine art portrait photographer from Antwerp, Belgium, known for his distinctive visual language inspired by the golden era of Hollywood. His work blends timeless elegance with a contemporary sensibility, creating portraits that evoke the cinematic atmosphere and refined glamour of the 1920s and 1930s.

Beginning his career photographing Europe’s leading burlesque performers, Milan gradually evolved towards fine art portraiture, developing a recognisable style defined by character, mood and visual storytelling rather than trends. His photography explores the balance between precision and imperfection, favouring lenses and tools that introduce softness, atmosphere and emotional depth into an image.

An ambassador for Leica Camera AG, Milan has exclusively worked with Leica cameras since 2006 and has collaborated closely with the brand on several important product launches and field tests. His work has contributed to projects involving the Leica S3 medium format system, the Noctilux-M 50mm f1.2 reissue, the Steel Rim 35mm f1.4, the Thambar-M 90mm f2.2, the Summilux-M 50mm pre-ASPH Classic reissue, and most recently the Noctilux-M 35mm f1.2 ASPH.

Alongside his photographic work, Milan is also an ambassador for Harlowe, working with continuous LED lighting systems that allow him to shape light in a precise yet natural way, reinforcing the cinematic quality that defines his portraits.

His work has been exhibited internationally in Leica galleries, highlighting the strong connection between his visual language and the brand’s photographic heritage. In 2022, Milan presented his first solo exhibition, Light of Seduction, at the Leica Gallery Porto. The exhibition paid tribute to feminine elegance through a series of images inspired by early Hollywood glamour, vintage décor and the mysterious atmosphere of the roaring twenties. The work invited viewers into a timeless setting of soft curtains, diffused light and subtle theatrical tension, where the spectator becomes almost a silent observer of intimate cinematic moments.

From December 2024 until February 2025, Milan presented his second solo exhibition, Echoes of Elegance: A Timeless Journey, at the Leica Store Paris Beaumarchais. This series expanded his visual narrative by combining portraiture with classic automobiles and refined interiors, reinforcing his fascination with timeless aesthetics and the dialogue between subject, light and setting. The exhibition explored how visual elements from the past can be reinterpreted in a contemporary context while preserving a sense of authenticity and emotional depth.

Milan regularly shares his experience as a speaker and educator. In 2023, he was invited as a speaker at the Leica Society International Spring Shoot, presenting his perspective on character lenses and portraiture. In 2026, he hosted Chasing Light: Noctilux Sessions at Leica Store Manchester, a workshop dedicated to the creative use and heritage of Leica’s fastest lenses.

His work has been published in LFI (Leica Fotografie International), Medium Format Magazine and Viewfinder. Milan’s portraits celebrate individuality, elegance and the enduring power of visual storytelling rooted in heritage, character and atmosphere.
